Apple today updated the MacBook Air with True Tone adaptive screen technology a lower price point. The Air now starts at $1099 (with $999 student pricing) down $100 from its $1199 retail price when it launched late last year. The price drop of the Retina MacBook Air to $1099 means that Apple has finally killed off the previous-gen non-Retina MacBook Air, which held the $999 price point for more than eight years....

Ready to tout the new features of its iPhone 5, Apple just posted a page on its website dedicated to showing off what type of photos the iPhone 5’s 8-megapixel camera can take. During the event, Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller explained that the 8-megapixel iSight camera was “enhanced” thanks to a new “sapphire crystal lens covering.” Schiller added that the new camera can take photos up to 40 percent faster and is 25 percent smaller to compensate for the iPhone 5’s smaller body....

We reported earlier this month on the quaint habit of iPhone purchasing for a profit all across London, as various folk pick up units to send into the lucrative Chinese grey market for the device — today we learn that Apple had to close its Beijing Apple store yesterday because grey market buyers were sucking all the store’s supply. Seems that Apple bumped up the sales limit on iPhone 4 from two to unlimited in Beijing’s flagship store, drawing an immediate huge crowd of eager customers — but these folks were buying iPhones in large quantities to resell on the grey market, which caused such a commotion security eventually shut AAPL’s flagship Chinese store down....

Two more of Apple’s smaller mall locations are set to relocate to significantly larger spaces this year, according to a document filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Both stores are due for renovations, having retained largely original appearances since opening in 2007. Speculation about Apple’s expansion in Lehigh Valley first began this past March, when the closure of both Ann Taylor and J. Crew locations adjacent to Apple’s storefront were announced....

Apple is apparently taking legal action against a company called Prepear, which is an app and service that makes it easier for people to meal plan and find new recipes. Apple’s legal complaint? The pear-shaped logo used by Prepear, seen above, is too similar to the Apple logo. According to the founders of Prepear, which is a spin-off of the Super Healthy Kids service, Apple is opposing the trademark application for Prepear and demanding that the company change the pear-shaped logo....

Apple TV+ is set to launch three separate new docuseries over the coming months with “Tiny World” narrated by Paul Rudd, “Becoming You” narrated by Olivia Colman, and “Earth at Night in Color” narrated by Tom Hiddleston. The year is almost up but Apple Pay is still popping up in new places. BJ’s Wholesale Club already accepted Apple Pay in its stores for members, and now BJ’s has become the second retailer to allow their store cards to be added to the Wallet app and be used for Apple Pay. Kohl’s was officially the first retailer to add Apple Pay support to their store cards in October, while JCPenney is said to be testing support ahead of a 2016 rollout....

There was a big furore in October when the community discovered that the redesigned Calculator app in iOS 11.0 had a semi-serious bug; people noticed that if you typed 1 + 2 + 3 quickly, it would give the incorrect answer. The real problem here was that the fade animation on the operand buttons (+, – etc) would block user interaction until it completed. This meant that if you typed quickly, the second press of the + button when typing 1 + 2 + 3 would be ignored, but really this happened with any combination of inputs that pressed the operands quickly....

Apple has pushed out an update to its suite of pro video editing tools for Mac today, including new versions of Final Cut Pro X, Motion, and Compressor. Final Cut has been upgraded to version 10.2, which adds support for 3D titles, improved color grading and effects tools, support for additional camera formats, and GPU-accelerated processing of RAW footage from RED cameras. Motion now has the ability to create custom environments and materials for 3D titles and export them directly to Final Cut Pro, while Compressor gains the ability to package movies for sale on iTunes....

Apple has released a bug fix update for iPhone users today. iOS 14.4.1 is rolling out now, and Apple says it includes important security fixes for iPhone users. You can update today by going to the Settings app on your iPhone. Apple today released the eighth beta developer of macOS Big Sur, which is expected to be available to the public sometime later this year. Adhering to government sanctions issued by the United States and European Commission in December, TechCrunch reports that Apple has started emailing notice of termination letters to registered developers in the Crimea region of Ukraine. Effective immediately, developers in the region cannot create or publish apps on the App Store and will be unable to access the developer portal, according to the reports. The decision follows an ongoing dispute between the United States and Russia over the Russian occupation of Crimea, an area that is internationally recognized as Ukraine territory....

MacRumors reports that Apple has a new 15 inch notebook with an ultra-thin design in its final testing stage. It’s difficult to tell if Apple will be marketing this 15 inch notebook as an extension of the popular MacBook Air line, or if it is a piece of Apple’s redesigned MacBook Pro line. Although the machine is reportedly in final testing, there is no word on a release date. Apple just released its Q1 2016 earnings, reporting “record” results of $75.9 billion in revenue and $18.4 billion in profit. In addition to its normal data, however, Apple has shared a new figure relating to the number of active devices it has in the wild. Apple says that it now has an active installed base of 1 billion devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, iPod touch, Apple TV, and Apple Watch.
