Yesterday we shared that the popular automatic screen brightness adjusting app Flux had found a way to make it from the Mac to iPhones and iPads on iOS 9. This afternoon the developers behind Flux announced that the app will no longer be available on iOS at the request of Apple. In a blog post sharing the development, the developers behind the app said that Apple contacted them to say that the app violated Apple’s Developer Program Agreement....

The long-running saga surrounding troubled Apple supplier Japan Display continues, with a much-touted rescue plan today thrown into doubt. A backer who was putting up almost a third of the cash for Japan Display’s belated expansion plans for OLED screens has withdrawn …. Caixin Global carries the report. The bad news doesn’t end there, either. The statement comes two months after a consortium including TPK proposed investing a total of 80 billion Japanese yen ($737 million) in JDI, according to JDI’s statement....

Apple is taking a different approach to pre-orders and sales for Apple Watch, which has a lot to do with the product being Apple’s first fashion accessory. For that reason, many customers will actually want to try the Apple Watch on in person before making the purchase. To get a feel for the new try-on experience — Apple started letting customers schedule appointments to try-on the device in-stores on April 10 — the company is surveying customers afterwards to get feedback and see if they plan on purchasing the device....

Earlier today, Apple rolled out the second beta of tvOS 9.2 for the fourth-generation Apple TV. The original beta included new features such as folder organization and Bluetooth keyboard support, but one highly requested new feature has been added today with the second beta. With tvOS 9.2 on Apple TV, users can now access their full iCloud Photo Library. The feature is turned off by default, but can be activated via the Settings app....

Apple is beginning final preparations to launch an iPhone trade-in program in its retail stores by next month, according to sources with knowledge of the initiative. This trade-in program will allow customers that own earlier versions of the iPhone, such as the iPhone 4S, to bring the phone into an Apple Store and exchange it for a new iPhone model, like the iPhone 5, at a discounted price… On the allure of a trade-in program, Apple CEO Tim Cook said during the last earnings call that he is “not opposed” to such a strategy....

Wintercore’s Ruben Santamarta claims Apple has failed to clean up some old code nested within QuickTime which can leave Internet Explorer vulnerable to yet another of the Microsoft browser’s long line of potential attacks. The exploit is simple to execute just by tricking a user into visiting a malicious site hosting the exploit code, a so-called “drive-by” attack. The attack code works when someone browses with IE on a machine running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 that has QuickTime 7....

Apple today issued a firmware update for Apple TV after earlier this week rolling out a new iMovie Theater channel that allows users to view movies and other video content uploaded to iCloud through iMovie Theater on other iOS devices. Today’s firmware update brings Apple TV software up to version 6.0.1, build number 11B511d, and is available for second and third generation Apple TVs through Settings>General >Software Update. The update brings “general performance and stability improvements,” but we’ll update you here if we discover any new goodies....

Apple surprisingly released yesterday the first developer beta of macOS Big Sur 11.0.1, which came even before macOS Big Sur was officially available to the public. Today, the company released macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 as a public beta. macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 doesn’t bring any new features compared to the previous macOS Big Sur beta, but Apple has included several new wallpapers — which you can download all here. Apple is presumably holding the first public release of macOS Big Sur for its rumored event in November, in which the company is expected to introduce the first Apple Silicon Mac....

Shortly after announcing its availability today, Apple has now released iOS 8.2 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. For iPhone users, the update adds support for the Apple Watch coming next month and improvements to the Health app. The update is available to download over-the-air through the Settings app. An updated version of the Apple TV software is also available for third-generation boxes. For developers, Xcode 6.2 is available in the Mac App Store....

After many beta releases on the Developer Center, Apple has just released OS X Lion 10.7.4 to the masses this afternoon via Software Update. The update weighs in at 729.6MB and fixes the horrible bug in OS X 10.7.3 that stored passwords in plain text, along with many other stability improvements among other things. Apple announced today that it will release iOS 14 to the public on September 16. iOS 14 includes a variety of new features and changes, such as home screen widgets, the App Library, and much more. iOS 14 is a significant update for iPhone users, bringing long-awaited support for Home screen widgets, as well as a new App Library feature for organizing apps that you don’t want to keep on your Home screen....

Apple published an open letter late Sunday night responding to recent allegations that the company had given customers’ personal information, including phone call logs, to the U.S. government as part of the National Security Agency’s secret “PRISM” program. In the letter, Apple notes that the government had in fact issued several thousand requests for such information, but that Apple’s legal department had carefully examined each request and turned over only the smallest amount of information necessary, sometimes rejecting requests outright....

Apple’s iTunes app Store has been open for almost four years an in that time has gone from 0 apps downloaded to 25 Billion (almost 4 apps for every human on the planet!). At the rate it is accelerating however, it should pass 40 billion by this time next year. As for the 25 Billion Apps downloaded contest, no winner has been announced but they will receive $10,000 gift certificate in iTunes or Mac App Store....

AAPL shares have crossed another major milestone with the market cap hitting over $1.5 trillion during trading today. The growth makes it the first US company to reach the achievement. Just last week we saw AAPL pushing closer to the $1.5 trillion market cap mark as it set an intraday record at $326 a share. After more recent gains, Apple’s stock price was up another 2% today to around $352, putting its total value of shares at $1....

Greek site Techingreek.com is reporting that Apple Service Providers will be providing after-sales service for Beats headphones and speakers within the country, suggesting that Apple itself may be doing the same in countries with Apple retail stores. The site says that the above message was sent to Apple Service Providers in Greece, stating that they will provide service for Beats Electronics products “in the near future” … The move would be a logical step on the path to fully integrating Beats into the Apple fold following the $3B acquisition back in May....

The families of several of those killed in an EgyptAir plane crash caused by an on-board fire have filed a lawsuit against Apple, alleging that the fire started when one of its devices overheated … EgyptAir Flight 804 crashed into the Mediterranean Sea on 19 May 2016, killing all 66 people aboard. No mayday call was received, but automatic data transmissions from the aircraft showed that smoke had been detected in both a forward bathroom and the avionics bay beneath the cockpit....

Leaving her role as CEO of Burberry to run Apple’s Retail and Online Stores division as senior vice president has garnered a lot of attention for Angela Ahrendts as Apple gears up for selling the Apple Watch starting next year. Today, Fortune’s 2014 list of the “Most Powerful Women in Business” has taken notice. Fortune writes: Ahrendts has so far been readily welcomed by Apple’s Retail Store employees as she began her new role this year, and Fortune ranks her at #29 as her first entry onto the list....

Apple is holding a training session with new managers to address unionizing tomorrow, reports CNet. The session will be held to address unions in the workplace and take any legal questions they might have. The internal document obtained by CNet said the following: The course will then become a biannual occasion for all of Apple’s retail managers. The push for this course by Apple’s executive team most likely comes after early this year when Apple employees began pushing for the “Apple Retail Workers Union” that would address issues of part-time employees being underpaid....

Apple TV+ has announced the latest addition to its growing library of unscripted programming. The short-form docuseries Greatness Code will premiere globally on July 10 and highlight “renowned athletes” including LeBron James, Tom Brady, and more.
