According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Apple had considered setting up an in-house medical service that would offer primary care clinics with doctors employed by Apple. The Journal says the company was exploring how the Apple Watch could be used to improve healthcare. This project was envisioned in 2016 but has seemingly been put on pause, partly because Apple’s dogfooding of a similar project for its own employees saw limited use....

Apple’s lack of lobbying presence in Europe left in largely in the dark about the long-running investigation into its Irish tax arrangements, argues the WSJ. It has been ruled that Apple underpaid tax in Europe to the tune of €13B ($15B). The piece contrasts this with Google, which spent ‘at least’ €4.25M ($4.8M) in the same timeframe. Google says that the money has been spent trying to help Brussels understand what the company does and how it works....

Apple Stores have been inundated with customers in search of replacement iPhone batteries since the end of last year when Apple reduced the service cost from $79 to $29. The move addressed criticism over how it handled performance throttling on iPhones with older batteries as a solution to unexpected shutdowns, but weeks-long wait times have proved problematic across most Apple Stores. Now, retail employees have shared that Apple is bringing in support from new sources....

Apple is nearly finished constructing a second retail location in the Chinese region of Macau. New signage installed over the building’s facade teases the store’s imminent opening for the first time. A dark blue-green canvas striped by undulating lines covers the exterior of Apple’s newest store adjacent to the Sands Cotai Central resort. A chromed Apple logo and two lines of Chinese characters are the only hints that iPhones and iPads will soon be sold inside....

Apple continues its hiring spree with Apple TV+. Today, it was revealed that the company has hired the BBC’s factual controller, Alison Kirkham, who will join Apple’s growing original content division based in the United Kingdom. Apple also announced that it has set an overall deal with Alena Smith, the showrunner of ‘Dickinson’. Dickinson was the first complete series released on the Apple TV+ service, with all episodes streaming from November 1st....

The all-new Apple TV app is now available for Samsung Smart TVs, marking the first time the video player has been available beyond Apple’s own platforms. Samsung Smart TVs are also gaining support for Apple’s AirPlay 2 feature for wirelessly sending audio and video to the TV screen without a set-top box attached. Both new features are available through a firmware update on newer Samsung Smart TVs. The company says all 2019 smart TVs and select 2018 models will receive the firmware update....

Following a rollout to the Royal Bank of Canada and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce earlier this month, Apple Pay is now coming to the other three big banks in Canada. With this rollout, Apple Pay is now supported by all of Canada’s “big five banks.” As reported by The Toronto Star, BMO, TD and Scotiabank customers will be able to use Apple starting tomorrow, June 1st. More specifically, Apple Pay will work with Visa, MasterCard, and Interac at TD Canada Trust, Visa and Interac at Scotiabank, and Interac and MasterCard at BMO....

Having filed a prospectus today with the SEC, Apple plans to offer around $5 billion in bonds, following a 2013 bond offering of $17 billion, and a 2014 offering of $12 billion. While Apple’s corporate coffers stand at over $178 billion after its most recent record-breaking quarter, even thriving companies sometimes use bond offerings to fund projects, lessening tax consequences in the process. Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs put together the offering, which Apple says will be used towards...

Apple plans to start selling the 12.9-inch iPad Pro on Wednesday, November 11th via both its physical retail and online stores, according to multiple sources. Apple previously only said that the large tablet would become available during the month of November, a couple of months after the introduction in early September. The iPad Pro’s marquee accessories, the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard, will also become available for purchase on November 11th....

Apple today previewed iOS 11.3 with a whole host of new features, including a new set of Animoji, an ARKit update, and the ability to view personal health records directly in the Health app. iOS 11.3 will be available to customers in the spring. A developer beta of iOS 11.3 will be released today. iOS 11.3 will also include the aforementioned battery health statistics features. Users will be able to disable the throttling in Settings → Battery, but may see more unexpected shutdowns in exchange for full performance....

China Business (via The Register) claims that Apple has returned between 5m and 8m iPhones due to quality issues. It’s not known which handsets are affected. The Register calculates that the total hit to Foxconn could be $1.6bn, but that of course assumes that the numbers are accurate and that nothing can be salvaged from the rejected phones. This is unlikely. Foxconn posted record profits in the final quarter of 2012 before experiencing a 19% year-on-year drop in the first quarter of this year....

Apple has issued a minor update for Final Cut Pro X 10.3 to squash several bugs. The 197MB update, which comes shortly after the major 10.3 release, fixes issues related to updating libraries, and more. All Final Cut Pro X users running 10.3 are encouraged to update to version 10.3.1. I’ve personally experienced many annoying crashes since updating to 10.3, so I’m hoping that this will eliminate the issues that I’ve been having....

Following the public release of iOS 13.5.1 today, Apple has also released the first beta of iOS 13.5.5 and iPadOS 13.5.5 to developers. This update likely focuses on bug fixes and performance improvements. [Update: Now rolling out to public beta users too.] Apple does not specify what new features are included in iOS 13.5.5 and iPadOS 13.5.5, but it’s likely that the update includes similar security enhancements to iOS 13.5.1. Apple is releasing iOS 14.2 GM to developer beta testers today, and to public beta testers. Notably, today’s new iOS 14.2 GM should bring a fix for the erroneous “A new iOS update is now available. Please update from the iOS 14 beta” notification that many users are seeing right now. iOS 14.2 GM is rolling out now and can be found in the Settings application. The release of this beta is particularly notable given the notification about a non-existent update many users have been seeing for the past 24 hours....

Apple’s programing language Swift saw its first preview release branch for 3.0 hit yesterday as the programming language moves closer to a finalized 3.0 release due later this year. Though nowhere near a final release of Swift 3.0, this marks the beginning of the major Swift revisions that developers will see coming later this year. According to the Swift-Evolution GitHub page, the primary goal of Swift 3.0 is to “solidify and mature the Swift language and development experience....

Ahead of the release of the iPhone X in less than a week, Apple has reminded developers to get their apps ready for the device. In a post on its developer blog, Apple is reminding developers to test their apps using the iPhone X simulator in Xcode code… Apple’s post is a simple heads-up for developers to test new iPhone X features in their app using Xcode and subsequently capture screenshots and upload the new metadata and app to iTunes Connect....

. There is some backlash over Apple’s recent move to delist its products from the U.S. EPEAT Government standard for Green computers. Today, it was reported that San Francisco was no longer able to buy Apple computers because of the delisting, and many other education, government and other big business entities could theoretically follow suit. Apple today announced the third generation of its 7.9-inch tablet with the new iPad mini 3. Apple says the new iPad mini 3 will start at $399 and be available for pre-order starting tomorrow. Storage capacities start at 16GB with both WiFi-only and Cellular options available. The new iPad mini 3 will be available in space gray, silver, and gold (for the first time). While the iPad mini 3 doesn’t contain much aside from Touch ID and a gold option, the new lineup does contain a price change for the higher storage capacities as 32GB has dropped from the lineup....

Re/code regularly gets Apple executives to appear at its annual conferences and this year is no exception. The site announced that Apple’s Senior Vice President of Operations Jeff Williams will speak at the Code Conference 2015, which runs May 26 to May 28th. Re/code’s speaker appearances typically take the form of an interview, so you can expect the executive to give some insight on Apple’s latest announcements (Apple Watch) although naturally major feature announcements will not be discussed....
