After months of speculation, Apple last week officially announced the headphone jack-free iPhone 7. Now, the company appears to be asking MacBook Pro users to take a survey concerning their use of the various connectivity options supported by their laptop. The survey, first noticed by MacRumors and corroborated by various posts on Twitter, addresses a variety of areas concerning the MacBook Pro. Arguably the most notable question, however, asks “Do you ever use the headphone port on your MacBook Pro with Retina display?”
Additional questions relate to the use of other ports. For instance, one question, asks “How do you upload photos from your digital camera or phone to your MacBook Pro with Retina Display?” This question most likely relates to the use of the SD card slot and USB ports, the former of which is expected to be removed when Apple refreshes the MacBook Pro lineup next month. Another topic of the survey relates to battery life.
Early leaked chassis images of the new MacBook Pro have suggested that the device will feature USB-C connectivity and a 3.5mm headphone jack, so it’s unlikely that Apple will do away with headphone jack connectivity anytime soon. The design of the MacBook Pro expected to be announced next month is almost definitely already finalized on Apple’s part, so the survey being sent to users likely relates to the next design iteration.
The design introduced next month will likely stick around for at least a few years, and while it’s possible that Apple could keep the design the same and still remove the headphone jack as early as next year, it’s likely that the change is pretty far down the road.
Nevertheless, it’s intriguing, yet expected, that Apple is already considering removing the headphone jack from the MacBook Pro. The device has been criticized in the past for lacking a variety of ports despite its “Pro” identification. Personally, I use the headphone jack on my iPhone far more than I do on my MacBook, so the results of this survey would be interesting to see.
