Apple reportedly owes Samsung ‘hundreds of billions of won’ for selling too few iPhones … ZDNet explains: 100 billion won is around $86M, so hundreds plural would be at least $170M, possibly more. The penalty goes back to Apple’s insistence that Samsung Display build a facility to exclusively manufacture OLED displays for the iPhone. Apple had told Samsung Display it would need 100 million OLED iPhone displays a year. But a slump in iPhone sales had a knock-on effect for Samsung Display, which saw its operating profits halve in a year, falling from 5....

KGI Research analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a timeline indicating that Apple is planning a massive rollout for multiple new products in Q3 2014. According to the Kuo, the only thing we can expect to see in the first half of the year is a small iMac update. Starting at the end of the third quarter and continuing into the beginning of the fourth, however, Apple will update most of its product lineup: iPad Air and mini, the Apple TV, and the MacBook family....

While Apple is widely expected to switch from LCD to OLED displays for future iPhones from either 2017 or 2018, one company is suggesting that the move made be a purely temporary one. Digitimes quotes Innolux chairman and CEO Wang Jyh-chau arguing that OLED is not suitable as a permanent replacement for LCD. As expected, Apple’s Chief Design Officer Jony Ive today took the stage at Vanity Fair’s New Establishment Summit at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Ive shared the stage with famed director, writer, and producer J.J. Abrams. During his time on stage, the Apple executive spent a decent amount of time discussing the life of the late Steve Jobs, who passed away four years ago this week....

According to a new report from Variety, Apple is among the tech companies negotiating with the NFL for digital rights to Thursday Night Football. Earlier this month, the National Football League inked deals with CBS and NBC to divide the TV rights for Thursday games over the next two seasons, but streaming to non-subscribers was not included in that deal. One thing to consider is that for users in the United States, the Thursday night games will already be available via streaming from CBS and NBC, depending on who is broadcasting that week’s game....

Continuing the Mac’s 30th anniversary celebration, Apple has a new featured section in the Mac App Store with a number of apps it says ‘capture the spirit of what makes this computer so extraordinary.’ In addition to Apple’s own apps, it features a number of third apps including 1Password, Evernote, Pixelmator, Fantastical, and more in addition to a section dedicated to games. Apple has celebrated the Mac’s 30 years in other ways as well including a custom home page and timeline, interviews with Macworld and ABC, an Apple Store display, and more....

Apple has just seeded the third beta of iOS 5 to registered to developers. Beta 3 of iTunes 10.5 is also available and will be required to sync with iOS 5 beta 3 devices. This new iOS 5 beta is compatible with the iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 4 (GSM/CDMA), iPod touch 3/4, and the Apple TV. Xcode 4.2 Preview 3 is also available for developers. Additionally, Xcode 4.1 has gone Golden Master and should be released soon....

Apple last week released iOS 10.3 to the public after a lengthy beta process. The update includes a handful of new features such as Find My AirPods. One issue related to the update that is just now emerging, however, relates to iCloud. Some users have apparently had iCloud services they once turned off, automatically come back on… As noted by MacRumors, some users have received emails from Apple explaining that a bug in iOS 10....

Ming-Chi Kuo is out with a new analyst note today and the most interesting part of his forecast is that Apple will release its first Mac with an ARM processor in the first half of 2021. Kuo is predicting that one of Apple’s new products to be released within the next 12-18 months will be a Mac with an in-house processor, instead of using an Intel CPU. There have been growing reports over the last couple of years about Apple making the switch to a custom-designed ARM processor for its Macs and today’s report gives a concrete timeframe for when to expect that launch, which has actually held true since Kuo’s prediction back in 2018....

A new study reveals that Apple TV+ has the highest-quality content when compared to Netflix, HBO Max, Prime Video, Disney+, and Hulu. The analysis from Self Financial uses IMDb scores with US customer data. The study found that although Apple TV+ had the highest average IMDb score for its titles (7.24), it has fewer than 70 titles to choose from. In terms of their libraries of content, Apple TV+ has the highest percentage of “good” and “excellent” at almost 86%....

The Apple TV update includes tweaks to the channel interface design and the addition of a Beats Music app. It also includes functionality updates that make it compatible with iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite features like iCloud Photo and Family Sharing. In 2020, consumers pulled out their digital wallets, like Apple Pay, more often than they did physical wallets when they paid in-store, according to a new FIS study. For the first time, payments using mobile digital wallets overtook cash payments on in-store purchases on a global basis last year. Head of Merchant Solutions at FIS, Jim Johnson, said that “the global pandemic has brought a cashless future closer on the horizon....

Apple’s TV app is available on Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad, and the new @AppleTV account seems focused on that app versus the set top box hardware specifically. While the software is simply called TV, Apple does refer to it as the Apple TV app as well. Live sports integration works with live games broadcasted from ESPN with live scores and game time remaining displayed across multiple live games on a single interface....

Apple has released the fifth macOS High Sierra 10.13.3 beta for testing. The release comes one week after the fourth macOS 10.13.3 beta; Apple released the fifth beta versions of iOS and tvOS betas late last week. Changes coming in macOS 10.13.3 are unclear for now. According to a new report out of Variety, Apple is looking to enter the TV and movie production industry in a way similar to how Netflix has recently done. The report claims that Apple has been looking to hire both actors and directors to create production divisions that would produce exclusive long-form content in-house. Specific details regarding the idea are unclear at this point as it appears to still be in the early stages of development....

Big improvements will be coming to Apple Watch apps later this year, Apple SVP of Operations Jeff Williams revealed during an interview at the Code Conference. In the current version of the Watch OS software, apps need to run on the iPhone rather than the watch itself, which puts a serious damper on performance. However, that will change this fall, Williams said, when native watch apps are finally made possible…...

Apple has published the eighth beta version of OS X El Capitan to its registered developers. The operating system is expected to be released later this year, with an announcement coming at Apple’s September 9th event. The newest build likely contains only some final bug fixes for the pre-release software since it will be released to the public in the near future. However, recent betas have introduced some new settings and features, so it’s possible there could be more in this update....

Despite its increasing focuses on Services revenue, Apple is struggling to draw users to the iTunes Store for movie purchases and rentals. According to a new in-depth report from The Wall Street Journal, Apple’s market share for renting and purchasing movies has fallen to between 20 percent and 35 percent, despite once being well over 50 percent as recently as 2012… The report cites “people with knowledge of the matter” and notes there are no third parties tracking digital movie market share, making it impossible to obtain exact numbers....

Apple introduced a new software feature with iOS 13 that helps prolong the life of your iPhone’s battery called “Optimized Battery Charging.” I’d love to see Apple not only expand it to iPad and Mac but also take a page out of Tesla’s book (and Dell, Samsung, others) and adopt a feature from its charging strategy.
