This week we learned that the iPhone 11 Pro still tracks location data even when users have turned the features off. Apple gave a limited response saying that “We do not see any actual security implications,” and that it was working as intended. However, now Apple has followed up with more details about why the iPhone 11 Pro is doing this and that it will include a toggle in an iOS update to stop location tracking totally....

Gizmodo Brazil has gotten their hands on the cheaper iPhone 4, which is codenamed N90A. The cheaper iPhone 4 was spotted at Brazil’s new Foxconn plant, which means we’ll likely start seeing our first “Made in Brazil” devices from Apple next week. The phone looks identical to the iPhone 4 of today, and will likely pack less storage than today’s models; 8GB in all likelihood. Their report corroborates our claims of an N90A iPhone 4 appearing in Apple’s inventory system for an imminent launch....

Apple’s Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) was introduced back in 2017 as a way to combat what the company described as overly-intrusive user tracking when browsing the web. The ad industry wasn’t happy about it, and something of a quarrel ensued. New data from IDC tracking worldwide tablet shipments shows that Apple has maintained its lead during the third quarter despite “a decline in overall iPad shipment volume in 3Q14.” Specifically, Apple grabbed 22.8% of the market with 12.3 million shipments during the quarter compared to 14.1 million units and 29.2% share in the year ago quarter. That compares to Samsung at 18.3% of the market and 9.9 million units shipped up from 19....

Apple’s top investigator Lee Freedman has departed the company for a new role at Facebook. Freedman previously served as the Director of Worldwide Investigations at Apple. Freedman, who has a background with the Justice Department, served in the top investigations role since 2011. Freedman is credited with creating Apple’s cyber program where he managed the company’s Cyber Investigations team before being promoted to Director of Investigations. Put simply, Freedman was responsible for preventing leaks and overseeing Apple’s team of investigators who track down how unreleased information and products escape Apple....

Apple today has made a small but notable change to its App Store Guidelines. The company quietly adjusted section 3.1 of the guidelines, which previously prohibited gifting in-app purchases to other users. With today’s change, however, Apple is permitting developers to add support for gifting in-app purchases. As first spotted by MacRumors, Apple previously indicated in its App Store Guidelines that gifting of in-app purchases was not permissible. The recent revision, however, says that developers are free to “enable gifting of items that are eligible in-app purchases to others....

As we broke last night, Apple is now carrying Thunderbolt parts. The Pegasus RAID units just showed up but we noticed something a little odd: . Interesting combo. Apple announced today that it plans to open its online store in India on September 23. The expansion will bring direct sales and an improved shopping experience to customers in the region for the first time. In accordance with a local Russian law that requires technology companies to store some user data on servers within the state, new filings reveal that Apple stores some iCloud information on local Russian servers. While the information stored is apparently limited to full name, address, email and phone number, Apple says more information is stored locally from their Russian employees. Specifically, messages, photos, contacts and documents are not saved locally for average users, however, Russian Apple employees’ records include passport numbers, work and income history, and full address reports....

Apple began a support Twitter account early in 2016, answering customer queries and tweeting out the occasional iOS tip. It has now expanded into a dedicated Apple Support YouTube channel. The account features highly-produced tutorial videos explaining all sorts of iOS features from how to change your wallpaper to deleting your call history. Each video shows a person’s hand walk through each step of the process, along with on-screen bullet points to reinforce the directions....

The Apple system status page is showing major outages for the App Store, Mac App Store, Apple Music and Radio. While the key merely says ‘outage’ for the red triangles, this symbol is almost never seen on the page … Apple generally uses a yellow blob to indicate ‘issues’ with a service, even when it is a severe one impacting a great many customers. The company did so for the major Google outage over the weekend, for example, which significantly affected a large number of Apple cloud services....

True Knowledge, the brains behind a popular Siri alternative for iOS devices, received a note from Apple that the company will shoot down the popular 99-cent download from its mobile bazaar. According to TechCrunch, True Knowledge had a call from an Apple representative on Friday evening who informed them the company was “going to pull Evi from the App Store,” citing similarities with Siri. However, pundits point out that Evi, which couples Nuance-licensed speech recognition engine with its own core semantic search technology dubbed the “True Knowledge Answer Engine,” may pose a threat to the otherwise stellar iPhone 4S sales due to folks running Evi on iPhone 4 being uncompelled to upgrade to an iPhone 4S....

The World Health Organization and Global Citizen have announced the “One World: Together At Home” virtual benefit concert for COVID-19 relief efforts. Hosted by Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, and Stephen Colbert, the event will be streamed live by Apple as well as many other platforms. The virtual benefit concert will take place on April 18 with a wide lineup of performers, including Elton John, Billie Eilish, Kacey Musgraves, and Chris Martin....

Apple is this week expected to reveal the first major brands who’ve signed-up for iAds in Europe, though initial euphoria greeting the launch of the service has now waned, with ads agencies complaining on price and that Apple are difficult to work with. The Financial Times reports Apple has delayed launching the service in Europe twice in the last few weeks, and has reportedly been willing to move slightly on price in order to attract big name brands....

Apple is coming out with its own subscription TV service, and if you didn’t know that by now, then we can only assume that you have cut yourself off from social media. To be honest, another subscription service is not what we need right now. But it’s trending, and every successful company knows that they have to be on-trend. That being said, we have to admit that Apple is coming to the table with some great prospects....

Earlier this week, Apple released eleven new underwater screensavers for the Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. If you are using the Aerial screensaver, the Apple TV will automatically download them and appear in the rotation alongside the existing videos. The new videos were added sometime this week, around Monday or Tuesday. The new screensavers are available in 1080p and 4K variants, which means they will show up on any tvOS-compatible Apple TV....

As expected, today during its iPad and Mac event Apple announced an official Oct. 20 launch date for Apple Pay, its new payments service unveiled earlier this year alongside the NFC-equipped iPhone 6 models. CEO Tim Cook also announced that the company has signed up 500 additional banks since first announcing initial partners last month. The banks will rollout Apple Pay this year and next, according to Cook. Initially the service will only be available for users in the US....
