China could see the first Apple TV being launched in the country in more than 15 years, according to Chinese blog Sina and Weibo leaker Voooolks. Last week, Apple announced the second-generation Apple TV 4K with the A12 chip inside it, a redesigned Siri Remote, and HDMI 2.1 support in its “Spring Loaded” event. As reported by Sina, Apple has received regulatory approval for the set-top box in China, granted by the General Administration of Press and Publication along with the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television....

In addition to other announcements, Apple today has unveiled the latest version of macOS in form of macOS 10.13. The update will be available to the public later this year and includes new features, interface tweaks, performance improvements, and more. macOS High Sierra cares a focus on deep technologies and refinements, according to Craig Federighi, with Apple working to refine macOS 10.12 Sierra with the update. Safari Apple introduced the latest version of macOS by outlining improvements to Siri that come as part of the update....

Three days after the last release, Apple has seeded an updated build of the OS X 10.10.3 software update for Mac. The new build ranks in at 14D130a, just a few steps above the 14D127 build released at the start of the week, for both developers and public beta testers. The update measures in at 1.52GB and highlights stability and security improvements. The new version of OS X Yosemite includes the all-new Photos for Mac app, new and diverse emoji characters, improved login for Google accounts, and developer APIs for Force Touch on the new 12-inch MacBook and 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro....

Since early September, rumors of an Apple radio service have been in the air. Several reports noted that the service is indeed on its way to compete with Spotify, RDIO, Pandora, and others, and the Wall Street Journal said we could expect it “in a matter of months.” However, CNET said today it might take longer. Greg Sandoval of CNET reported that Apple has still yet to gain major record labels for the rumored music streaming service:...

Apple has long taken a 30% cut of sales made through its various digital stores, including fees charged for subscriptions to Newsstand magazines and other recurring charges. However, Re/code reports today that the company has cut that figure in half for subscriptions charged through the Apple TV. In a move that’s likely intended to bring in content, Apple allows companies like Hulu and HBO to keep a larger portion of their subscription fees on the TV-based hub device, though charges made through iOS apps and other platforms still seem to fall under the 30% deal....

After releasing new tutorial videos for developers yesterday, Apple today has added a variety of new and more specific app categories to the tvOS App Store. The changes, first noticed by AfterPad, make it even easier for users to easily and quickly discover new apps for the fourth-gen Apple TV. The new categories bring the tvOS App Store closer to being in line with the iOS App Store. The tvOS App Store’s new categories change from apps centered around business and travel content, to medical and productivity apps....

If you’ve been holding out hope that Apple’s October 13 event will include the announcement of the long-rumored AirTag item trackers, things aren’t shaping up in your favor. A new rumor today claims that AirTags have been delayed until March of 2021. Jon Prosser reports on Twitter that he’s hearing from his sources that “Apple has pushed back the announcement and launch of AirTags to March of 2021.” This comes after a previous report indicated that the AirTag item trackers could be released alongside the iPhone 12 this month....

Digging through an internal build of iOS 13 from June, MacRumors’ Joe Rossignol and Steve Moser got a look at how the Find My app could display “Items” in a new tab that isn’t currently seen in the iOS 13.1 beta. Apple’s new Tile-like tracker is expected to be an extension of the fresh Find My tracking capabilities that allows users to find Apple devices even if they’re offline. The Wall Street Journal takes a look at Apple’s continuous shifts and expansion of its Asia-based product suppliers. For several years, Foxconn has been known as the de facto Apple manufacturing partner for iPhones, iPads, iPods and Macs. However, over the past few years, Apple has begun manufacturing certain products at Tawain-based Pegatron. Today’s report positions Apple’s move to diversify its production manufacturing partners as one to reduce risk and to provide greater supply chain balance....

Apple today has shared its latest iPhone XS and iPhone XR advertisement. This one focuses on Depth Control, which allows users to “get the perfect amount of blur” when taking a picture. In the ad, Apple shows the process of taking a Portrait Mode image and subsequently adjusting the depth of field. Depth Control was introduced last year as part of iOS 12 on the iPhone XS and iPhone XR....

The ad is colorful and animated, much like iOS 7 itself, and features various parts of the hardware and software merging and morphing to show that they were designed with each other in mind. In late January, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced to employees that a new major Mac and iPad discount program for employees would kickoff at some point in late June of this year. Keeping that promise, Apple, today, has started the new employee Mac and iPad discount program. Apple employees are able to purchase Macs with a $500 discount (excluding the Mac mini) and iPads with a $250 through Apple’s internal employee portal....

In traditional fashion, the Apple Store is down ahead of Apple’s announcements at today’s event at Lane Tech High School in Chicago. The education-focused event is expected to feature a new entry-level iPad, as well as a raft of software announcements aimed at attracting schools to convert to Apple devices. The event kicks off at 10 AM Central time. Apple won’t be live-streaming this time around, but we’ll be bringing liveblog coverage from the event so stay tuned....

As awards season is ending, Apple TV+ continues to announce its catalog for 2021 and beyond. Hello Tomorrow! starring Emmy Award winner Billy Crudup has been ordered as an Apple Original. This new 10-episode, half-hour drama will star Emmy and Critics Choice Award winner Billy Crudup from The Morning Show, who will also serve as an executive producer. Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World) is attached to direct the series, which comes from MRC Television....

Bluetooth support is not present within the Apple TV operating system (iOS), but Apple’s next major operating system, iOS 5, will turn on this bluetooth support. Apple is positioning this bluetooth support mainly for keyboards, but perhaps the bluetooth Apple TV will be able to connect to bluetooth iPads, iPhones, and iPod touches....

Apple has made several changes at the executive level recently. Bloomberg reports today that Apple has promoted a handful of employees to the vice president level, which is described as “a key title reserved for the most influential players.” Paul Meade has been named a vice president of hardware engineering, while Jon Andrews is now the vice president of software engineering. According to Bloomberg, Meade has led hardware development for Apple’s augmented reality headset, while Andrews works closely with Craig Federighi on software architecture....

Update: According to Reuters, the settlement is $415 million, a big improvement over the previous $380 million offer. Apple has reached a deal with its employees over do-not-hire policies that workers claim prevented them from getting higher-paying jobs at competing companies. Judge Lucy Koh previously rejected an offer to the tune of $324 million that the plaintiff in the case said was too low. Today’s settlement is presumably for much more money than the original, since the plaintiff has accepted it, but the details of the deal have not yet been disclosed....

We’ve seen Apple Watch catch on with a handful of insurance providers so far. Now, CNBC reports that Devoted Health has become the first health insurer with private Medicare plans to offer a discounted Apple Watch as a benefit. Devoted Health is a start-up health insurer that says it wants to stand out among Medicare Advantage plans with a focus on “world class technology.” Back in January, a report said that Apple had started working with Medicare plan providers to subsidize the cost of Apple Watch hardware, and this deal with Devoted Health is seemingly the first to come to fruition....
