The Financial Times has officially been removed from the App Store after failing to comply with Apple’s in-app subscription model that requires payments to be processed through iTunes (giving Apple a 30% cut in the process). The publication used to have an iPhone and iPad app, which appear to have been removed from the App Store today. Fortunately for FT (not so much for Apple), they also have an HTML5 web app alternative that they’re urging iOS users to use instead....

After announcing in September that it would begin “removing problematic and abandoned apps” in an effort to clean up the App Store, new data shows Apple is now fulfilling that promise with removals dramatically increasing around 238 percent last month. The data below from research firm Sensor Tower (via TechCrunch) shows around 47,300 apps were removed in October, around 3.4 times more than the average month for the App Store prior to the new purging initiative....

Apple has been slowly restoring their Developer Center, and today the company has sent out an email update to developers regarding the restorations to take place this week: Apple’s Developer Center went down a little bit over two weeks ago due to an attempted breach into the system. The site began coming back about a week after that, starting with downloads and documentation. In order to provide developers with information on the restoration progress, Apple rolled out an iCloud-like status page....

Digitimes is out today with a report that states Apple and Samsung are set to introduce wireless charging flagship phones this year. At least with Apple, this is unlikely. We heard 2013 is an ‘S’ year for the iPhone, implying minor design changes with at most the possibility of a fingerprint reader (as well as better cameras, faster processor, and the like), but the design changes to the aluminum shell would need to be significant to make wireless charging possible....

After allegations that Apple was copying the classic Swiss Railway clock design for its new Clocks app in iOS 6, Apple was expected to meet with Swiss Federal Railways SBB to presumably find some sort of resolution. SBB made an official announcement on its website (via TheVerge) today, claiming it has reached an agreement with Apple: Swiss Federal Railways is not disclosing how much the agreement is for, but it said Apple has agreed to its licensing terms for use of the Hans Hilfiker designed railway station clock design....

Apple has just published its third update to the revamped Mac version of iMovie launched last year. The update, version 10.0.3, makes changes to the default font in the new titles first added to last year’s release. It also includes the ability to sort events by date to quickly find clips by when they were recorded. Other improvements include the ability to rotate and crop clips within events rather than projects, an easier method of accessing transition duration settings, faster access to clip speed controls, improvements to how speed changes are handled, and various bugs that could cause the app to crash or not do what was expected....

Apple is out with the second public beta version of the upcoming OS X 10.11.4 software update for Mac. The release adds a secure, password-protected Notes, which sync with iOS 9.3, as well as support for viewing and sharing Live Photos over iMessage with the Messages app. Other focus areas include the iBooks and Photos apps, according to Apple. Today’s release follows the developer version of the same software update earlier this week....

Apple this morning has released OS X 10.10 Yosemite Developer Preview 5. The new update brings various performance improvements and bug fixes. Apple has provided the following statement to Business Insider when asked about CVS and Rite Aid both blocking Apple Pay at their checkout terminals: Earlier today CVS confirmed in a statement to CNBC that it will not be accepting Apple Pay after users previously reported being able to the chain’s NFC terminals: “At this time, CVS/pharmacy cannot accept Apple Pay or other mobile payments that use NFC technology. Ars Technica is reporting that a judge has denied Apple’s request to intervene in Lodsys’ current patent disputes against app developers. Apple originally filed a motion to step in to the case in June, 2011. However, the judge has disregarded Apple’s statements saying that it is out of the scope of the active trial in an order dated September 24th. Apple continues to oppose the alleged patent infringements, saying that their license covers third-party developers to use their technology....

Apple will report its fiscal first quarter results tomorrow for the October to December 2011 period during which the Cupertino, Calif.-based company saw the death of its cofounder and the record-breaking sales of its latest iPhone. As Apple is about to finally flip the switch on a massive 500,000 square feet datacenter in North Carolina, said to be one of the biggest in the world, TechCrunch heard the company’s rumored iOS 5 voice recognition technology is driven by Nuance Communications’ technology that runs in the Apple cloud. In a new WWDC session video today, Apple has elaborated on the system architecture of the forthcoming Apple Silicon Mac transition. Notably, this will mean a few changes to the experience, including a new macOS Recovery options screen, as well as the deprecation of Target Disk Mode. Currently, you can access a variety of macOS Recovery features at boot-up, but each one requires a different key combination. As 2018 winds down, many of Apple’s in-progress retail projects are beginning to wrap up. Overnight, the company announced online that its store at Southlake Town Square in Southlake, Texas will reopen on Saturday, November 3rd at 10:00 A.M .Apple Southlake Town Square closed on March 4th for renovations. Changes to the store have been fairly significant and extend beyond a simple expansion. Apple has essentially redeveloped the entire lot the 2006-era store occupies with a new building....

A new report from Canalys shows that Apple’s phones accounted for 22% of smartphone shipments globally at the end of 2021. Canalys noted that the last time Apple ranked number one in the smartphone market was in Q4 of 2020. “Apple saw unprecedented iPhone performance in Mainland China, with aggressive pricing for its flagship devices keeping the value proposition strong,” Canalys analyst Sanyam Chaurasia said in a statement. “Apple’s supply chain is starting to recover, but it was still forced to cut production in Q4 amid shortages of key components and could not make enough iPhones to meet demand....

Buried in today’s Q3 2017 Apple earnings call was Luca Maestri’s announcement that Apple Pay is coming to a handful of new countries by the end of the year. The Apple CFO announced that Apple Pay will come to the UAE, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden by the end of this year… Maestri didn’t offer any specific launch information, simply saying Apple Pay is “scheduled to go live before the end of this calendar year” in those countries....
